As the season comes to an abrupt end for most ski areas don’t hang up your skis just yet. It is still winter at Killington. A friend and I went yesterday April 18th and were more than pleasantly surprised. There is so much snow on all the trails that not a single bare spot was showing. Every trail on the mountain has snow; unfortunately the trails are not always accessible since they are only running a few lifts during the week as you can read below there will be limited access after May 4th.
Our day started out with clouds and some wind with a first run where there actually was some fresh powder on the trail that had been windblown. The surface below was groomed frozen granular but if you stuck to the side of the trail that was shielded by the wind you could find a powder run up at the Northridge triple. Runs on Powder line, Rime and East fall were great along the tree line. Now the sun started to come out and it was a dramatic change. We shifted to the superstar express quad and the surface on skylark and superstar became soft and very skiable and did not turn into mashed potatoes as does usually happen when the temperatures really climb. We skied till 2 and it was soft corn snow and with the wider skis that we have you just glided nicely along the surface. What a great day it was!
It has been a blustery and wintry this week at Killington, but that’s about to change–the sun is returning just in time for this weekend’s Nor’Beaster Bud Light Dazed and Defrosted Music Festival. Dazed and Defrosted is a full-day, slope-side party that brings live music, cold brews, on-snow demos and, of course, spring skiing and snowboarding to the K-1 Base Area. Headlining the entertainment this year are Madaila and BRYAC Funk All-Stars.
The Nor’Beaster Spring Events series continues next weekend, with the Bud Light Killington Triathlon before wrapping up on Tuesday, May 1 with the Bud Light May Day Slalom. There will be skiing and riding daily through May 1, and then, beginning Friday, May 4, the Superstar Express Quad will operate Friday thru Sunday until the snow is gone. With the cool spring they have had, that could be late May, or even June.
There’s still plenty of spring fun ahead, take advantage of the slopes this weekend and on into June.
